For aspiring writers, having their work published is the ultimate honor. Through her internship with The Sandusky Register, senior Deborah Fultz has been given that opportunity.
Her internship with the newspaper began less than a month ago. Despite only working there a short time, Deborah has already become increasingly involved. “I’ve had to contact people whether making phone calls, sending emails or doing interviews. I wrote an article my first day. The next day it was published in the newspaper,” she said with a smile. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Several of Deborah’s articles have already been published, both in the newspaper and online. You can read one of her recent articles here.
The process of setting up her internship was simple with the help of the Owen Center for Academic and Career Support here at Heidelberg. “I wanted to apply for an internship and for grad school, so I went to (Mark McKee). We called around to some places and looked online,” Deborah said. Their search led them to The Register. “We talked to Matt Westerhold who is the managing editor. Mark emailed him my resume, I followed up and called Matt a couple weeks later and he said, ‘You got the job!’ That was a great feeling.”
Mark McKee, director of Career Development and Placement, helped Deborah in her search for the right internship. “It just so happened that The Sandusky Register was open to having an intern this semester and Deborah was a perfect fit for them,” Mark said. “The Owen Center understands that the internship and career search can be tough, so we try to provide students with one-on-one help in securing relevant experiences.”
With the recent Career Ready Internship Grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp., Deborah is able to be compensated for her internship work through the university. The grant allows students seeking internships to gain experience with pay for their future career without worrying about money.
With everything falling into place for Deborah, the focus remains on staying on course to graduate in the spring of 2017. As for her future plans, she aspires to be an editor in a big city. “Ideally, I would like to be an editor at a publishing company. I’d like to be an editor and write on the side,” she said. Her passion for writing still remains clear though. “I want to be able to inspire people in my writing and give them hopes and dreams.”
