The Heidelberg University Council of Teachers of Mathematics (HUCTM), a student-led organization dedicated to breaking the stigma around math for students of all ages, is organizing a free virtual summer camp for Tiffin City Schools students in kindergarten through grade 5 next month.
The camp, Tiffin Tall Tales: Virtual Summer Camp, will use fairytales through the venue of the Tiffin community to encourage students to utilize their math and reading skills.
Camp dates are July 20-31 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. The schedule is as follows:
- Mondays & Fridays: All grade levels
- Tuesdays: Grades K-1
- Wednesdays: Grades 2-3
- Thursdays: Grades 4-5
HUCTM is best known for the Math Camps provided to area schools during the school year, according to Dr. Lindsey Haubert, assistant professor of education and the HUCTM advisor. Given the cancellation of spring Math Camps and the current need for academic support heading into the new school year, Tiffin Tall Tales will give students a jump-start for the upcoming school year while providing a fun, adventurous activity, she said.
Local businesses are being asked to join the fun, too. Several individuals from local businesses will participate in the Zoom meetings as special guests, including Ashley Meece from the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library on Tuesday, July 23, and John Reino from Reino’s Pizza and Pasta on Saturday, July 27.
Additionally, a downtown scavenger hunt is being planned to re-engage students and their families in the community while reinforcing academic skills. When families visit, businesses will provide each student with a clue and a raffle ticket. Students will use the clues to figure out elements of fairy tales. The raffle tickets will be used for a drawing to win one of five Tiffin Strong T-shirts and five Heidelberg Math Camp T-shirts on the last day of the camp.
Children and their families will visit businesses July 21-23. If students are unable to visit during those days, they may also stop by on July 25. To limit the number of families visiting and to abide by COVID-19 guidelines, students will have assigned days to visit based on grade levels.
Additional details will be provided in supply packets to be distributed to participants in July prior to the camp. Businesses that would like to participate are urged to contact Lindsey Haubert at lhaubert [at] heidelberg.edu or 567-230-6094.
