Heidelberg University is offering a series of camps in July as a way to toss away summer boredom for a day. High school students who seize this opportunity will find themselves scared (in a good way), learn how to conduct scientific research, delve into a world where pop music meets mental health, and practice new techniques in acting, singing and dancing.
The camps are scheduled for July 17-20 and run from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Heidelberg’s friendly, accessible campus. A different camp experience is planned each day. The cost for each camp is $60 per student. Pick your camp, or pick all four, and register at www.heidelberg.edu/summer-camps-2024.
Here’s more about each day camp:
Scary Stories to Tell at the Berg
Wednesday, July 17
This one-day summer camp will give you the opportunity to explore the stories that scare us. We’ll talk about Heidelberg and Tiffin ghost stories. We’ll tour spooky spots on campus that ignite our imagination. We’ll read famous scary stories and we’ll spend the afternoon writing and sharing our own stories.
In exploring these things, we’ll discover the ways that these kinds of stories connect us to one another, to our location and to our history. Bring a notebook and something to write with, as well as a sense of adventure while we delve into the macabre and the terrifying.
This camp is open to current high school students with graduation years between 2024 and 2027.
Water Detectives - Rivers and Wetlands
Thursday, July 18
Led by researchers from the National Center for Water Quality Research, participants will become water detectives to determine the health of local streams and wetlands. In the field, hands-on training with specialized water quality equipment will help you learn how to assess the physical, chemical and biological components of streams and wetlands.
After collecting your own data, learn how to analyze it to determine the health of the water. Lastly, learn how your findings can be used to guide decision-making and policy on real-life water quality issues threatening our freshwater systems.
This camp is open to current high school students with graduation years between 2024 and 2027.
All Too Well - Heidelberg's Version
Friday, July 19
Join us for "All Too Well (Heidelberg's Version),” where Taylor Swift's melodies meet mental health exploration for high school juniors and seniors! This Swift-themed experience offers a unique blend of self-discovery and introduction to the mental health field. Through workshops and activities led by mental health experts and current professors, participants will delve into topics such as stress management, healthy coping and holistic wellness, all while building individual skills for personal growth. Swifties and mental health enthusiasts alike will find a welcoming space to explore their passions and interests.
Conclude this day feeling inspired, connected and empowered as we harmonize the worlds of Taylor Swift and mental health! This camp is open to high school juniors and seniors only.
Theatre Slay Day
Saturday, July 20
This one-day Theatre Intensive Summer Camp, taught by Karla Kash, Director of Theatre at Heidelberg, is an opportunity to learn acting, singing, and dancing techniques for performing in theatre. During the camp, you will learn a short jazz/hip-hop dance combination and work on improvisation, monologues and songs.
Students who wish to sing will need to bring a memorized song with the track. The songs should be around 90 seconds in length. If students have a short monologue memorized, around 90 seconds, they should prepare that as well. There will be monologues available for students to work on at the camp. All students should wear comfortable clothes and shoes that they can move in. No flip-flops, sandals or bare feet are allowed.
This camp is open to current high school students with graduation years between 2024 and 2027.
