On November 11, 1850, then-Heidelberg College opened its doors in a room on the third floor of what was known as “Commercial Row” in downtown Tiffin. Five students were enrolled for the first classes.
Heidelberg – now University – has a long and storied history. A lot has changed and we’ve come a long way since those mid-18th century days. It’s high time to celebrate! Earlier this semester, the campus launched our official celebration of the 175th anniversary of our founding, which will culminate with a very big birthday bash on Nov. 11, 2025.
A committee of faculty, staff, students, Trustees and alumni, under the direction of Associate Vice President Ashley Helmstetter, has created a series of eight major events to celebrate Heidelberg’s 175th.
These celebratory events are designed to engage the entire Heidelberg family – from students to alumni to faculty and staff and the community.
The first event has already occurred with the traditional Opening Convocation in late August. Homecoming 2024 represents another opportunity for the campus community, including the Board of Trustees who will be on campus for their fall meetings. Everyone will have the opportunity to be a part of history by signing their name and class year to one of the beams that will become part of the structure of the new Student Athletics, Academic, and Recreation Center, opening in Fall 2025.
Other celebratory events planned for January-November 11, 2025, are as follows:
· Winterfest (January 17-19, 2025)
· Siggy’s Spring Clean-Up in Downtown Tiffin (March 30, 2025)
· Commencement (May 11, 2025)
· Alumni Weekend (June 13-15, 2025)
· Homecoming Fieldhouse Dedication (October 2025)
· Heidelberg’s 175th HYPEd Birthday Bash (November 11, 2025)
Earlier this semester, Heidelberg unveiled an original logo for the 175th anniversary with the tagline Opportunity Makers Since 1850 to incorporate the university’s new branding. The clean orange, white and black circular logo was created by David Stosio, digital designer in the Marketing & Communication Services Office, with input from the 175th Planning Committee.
The logo is already appearing on promotional materials and will soon be available on merchandise in Heidelberg’s bookstore.
Stay tuned for details about the remaining 175th celebratory events in the weeks and months to come.
