It’s On Us, a week of events to raise awareness and prevent sexual violence on college campuses, is scheduled for the week of April 23.
Launched a year ago, the week offers events for students, staff and faculty – everything from a talk by a sex therapist, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, artistic expressions, bystander training and the popular “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” with a twist!
The Stoner Health Center, Counseling & Disabilities Center, in conjunction with the It’s On Us Committee, is coordinating the series this year.
Here is the schedule of events:
Monday, April 23
“Good Sex” Forum with Ashley Grinonneau-Denton
7:30 p.m., Gundlach Theatre
Grinonneau-Denton, a nationally certified sex therapist, will discuss Sex Positive topics and provide educational information on healthy relationships, sexual interactions, consent and LGBTQ relationships. The forum is sponsored by Berg Events Council, Office of Campus Life, Office of Religious Life and Civic Engagement and Stoner Health, Counseling & Disabilities Center.
Tuesday, April 24
Keynote Speaker: Don McPherson
11 a.m., Seiberling Gymnasium
McPherson, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, engages people in the prevention of unhealthy behaviors toward others. For more than 27 years, he has used the power and appeal of sport to address complex social justice issues. He has created innovative programs, supported community service providers and provided educational seminars and lectures throughout North America.
Open Mic/Art Gallery
3:30 p.m., The University Commons
Members of the Heidelberg community is invited to display their talent either through the art gallery or via an open microphone. All art and performances will be related to healthy sexual interactions and/or healthy relationships and provide a positive/open message about sex.
Wednesday, April 25
Bystander Training
7:30 p.m., The University Commons
Professors Stephen Svoboda and Robin Heaton will lead a breakout session with dialogue on drawing the line on sexual harassment and assault. The exercises intend to demonstrate that these incidents can happen to anyone.
Thursday, April 26
“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes”
7 p.m., Hoernemann Stadium
“Walk a Mile” returns to Heidelberg with a slight twist! This year’s event is organized by the Cheer Squad and will include skill-building related to consent and bystander intervention. Students also will have an opportunity to discuss topics related to gender-based violence during their walk. The event will include a variety of different groups from the campus and the community.
