This is big weekend for the Tiffin community. As the community comes together Sunday for the first-ever Patriot Day Salute in observance of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, students will give the events a strong Heidelberg flavor.
‘Berg students will participate as performers and as volunteers as the community comes together in a day-long tribute to honor all first responders: military personnel, veterans, police officers, firefighters and hospital employees in memory of lives lost on 9/11.
The day begins at 8:35 a.m. with a 9/11 Memorial Service at the Tiffin Police & Fire All Patriots Memorial at the corner of Water and Washington streets. The service begins at 8:46 a.m. – the actual time the first World Trade Center Tower was struck.
Following the ceremony will be the Patriot Day Salute 5K at 9 a.m. Registration is from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Tiffin Rotary Pavilion on Frost Parkway. A large ‘Berg team numbering about 25 is signed up to run, walk or serve as spirit squad members. You can still sign up on race day.
A large parade is planned to begin at 1:30 p.m. in downtown Tiffin. Heidelberg’s director of bands Jon Waters has organized a mass band of high school, Heidelberg and alumni musicians who will perform at the parade and prior to the headliner concert at the Seneca County Fairgrounds later in the day. Our Athletic Band will be joined by Calvert, Columbian, Mohawk and Seneca East high school bands along with an Ohio State University Alumni Band.
Anyone who would like to march in the parade behind the Athletic Band should gather at Columbian High School at 1 p.m. The Heidelberg delegation will include students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Headlining the day of events is a concert by country music star Darryl Worley at the Seneca County Fairgrounds. About 40 football players already have volunteered to help with cleanup after the concert. Other students, staff and faculty also will be volunteering to assist disabled persons and to assist with parking before, during and after this concert and other events leading up to it.
We encourage students to enjoy the Patriot Day Salute events as important members of the Tiffin community. Many of the events are free.
