Family Ties
My brother attended and graduated from here and during his time on campus, I visited him quite often. I usually hung out with him, his fraternity brothers and others around here. He brought me to campus events, too, and the place grew on me. It already felt like my home after his four years as a student.
Universal Support
My favorite part of campus and the Heidelberg community is the overwhelming support toward students from faculty, staff and peers. Oh, and stargazing on the roof of Gillmor (Hall).
Student Senate President
Aside from being a general body member my first year, I served as publicity chair, vice president and president of Student Senate. As president I attend monthly faculty meetings, speak at Convocation, ensure that the students’ voices are heard among the administration, attend Board of Trustees meetings, ensure Senate meetings run smoothly and maintain a fun and productive environment for all Student Senators.
Greenhouse Club
We’re more than a chill group of people who maintain the campus greenhouse, although we do that, too. We plan events and field trips throughout the year such as apple picking, pumpkin carving, visiting the zoo for Lights Before Christmas and our Earth Day plant sale. Ideas have recently been tossed around to volunteer around Tiffin, collaborate with Parkhurst Dining to compost and bring rain barrels to campus.
A Comfortable Voice
Speaking at events like Opening Convocation and HYPE has allowed me to achieve a level of confidence that I had never dreamed possible. As a first-year student in my Public Speaking class, I dreaded standing in front of my class of 30 people and reading a speech. My knees would buckle, my hands would get clammy and I would say “um” about a million times. Fortunately now I don’t mind public speaking even in front of hundreds of people.
