Heidelberg University’s School of Music & Theatre will showcase the talents of its major student vocal and instrumental ensembles as well as theatre performers during its first Extravaganza Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.
Taking the stage in Seiberling Gymnasium will be the Marching Band and the Jazz Band, both under the direction of Jon Waters; the Heidelberg Hei-Notes show choir (formerly the Singing Collegians), under the direction of Margaret Thiele; the Concert Choir and the Chamber Singers, under the direction of Greg Ramsdell; and the cast of the fall production of The Music Man, under the direction of Stephen Svoboda.
The Extravaganza Concert is the culmination of the School of Music & Theatre’s Fall Open House. Throughout the day, prospective students will be able to explore the world of music and theatre at the collegiate level by attending various sessions such as careers in the arts, music education, auditioning techniques, acting and stagecraft, vocal and instrumental performance, composing in the 21st century, conducting and more. High school students also will have the opportunity to audition for the School of Music & Theatre and can attend the Extravaganza Concert for free.
The concert will highlight unique collaborations among the ensembles. For example, the Marching Band and the cast of The Music Man will perform 76 Trombones. The band also will collaborate with the Hei-Notes for a number from The Greatest Show and with the Concert Choir to close the concert with a performance of Heidelberg’s alma mater, Sweet Alma Home, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
