Keynote Speaker
Brandi Powell is an anchor/reporter with KSTP-TV (ABC affiliate) in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. She has been part of the KSTP-TV 5 Eyewitness News team since January 2014. At KSTP-TV, Ms. Powell anchors Saturday night newscasts as well as morning newscasts on both Saturdays and Sundays. She also reports news stories in the field on weekdays.
Previously, Ms. Powell was a reporter/multi-media journalist at KNSD-TV (NBC affiliate) in San Diego from 2011-2013, covering breaking news, crime and politics. While at KNSD-TV, she also served as a regular on-air contributor for "Politically Speaking," the station's weekly public affairs show. From 2008-09, she was a reporter, video journalist and county bureau chief at News 8 in Austin, Texas, covering Fort Hood and surrounding communities. Ms. Powell’s first on-air position was as a political reporter at KFYR-TV (NBC affiliate) in Bismarck, North Dakota, where she covered statewide elections and legislative sessions from 2006-2008. She began her career behind the scenes as a production assistant at MSNBC from 2005-2006. Two internships helped to shape her career – one with The Washington Center for the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City and one with Dateline NBC.
She is the recipient of multiple team Emmy awards and several individual Emmy nominations, and earned two North Dakota Associated Press awards. Professionally, Ms. Powell is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Twin Cities Black Journalists. She regularly attends events and moderates panel discussions in her community.
Ms. Powell earned her master’s degree in anthropology with a concentration in international development from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She received her bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a minor in Spanish from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As an undergraduate, she studied abroad in Barcelona and Salamanca, Spain.
In her spare time, Ms. Powell enjoys traveling and learning about different cultures. She loves to paint, watch movies, hike and attend live jazz and theatre performances. She is conversational in Spanish.
