Tyler Majoy
English, Class of 2017
My mom is an art teacher so at a very young age, I was exposed to works of some of the great artists. I always got in trouble in grade school for doodling. I do a lot of writing. A lot of painting, too. I try to intermittent mix the two. There’s an art style that I really like called “polka trash.” You write a couple lines then deck it out, write again and do the same or maybe throw an image in it. You use sharp contrasting colors, usually white and black with a sharp color. It’s something I do whenever I get bored. It pulls you away from everything so you can relax.
One of my favorite writers, William Blake, wrote poems about the Industrial Revolution but then could drop some awe-inspiring art along with it. That’s what I consider myself or want to consider myself -- as a writer who also has the ability to be an artist.
I feel like people are fake around art. I generally don’t like a majority of my art or writing because to me it’s flawed. I don’t really share my work with too many people because I want them to be honest about it. I’ll share it with a group of close friends and my advisor, Bill Reyer, because I know they’ll lay into it to help make it great. They’re not afraid to do that.
Why Heidelberg?
I’m a legacy. My dad and my uncle came here. They both wrestled here. I planned on wrestling in Division I or II, but when I came to Heidelberg I realized this was much more my style. I’ve never had a thought that I would’ve been happier somewhere else.
Tyler has been very involved during his four years on campus. He is the president of Greek Life Council, a resident assistant, and a member the wrestling team. He will graduate with a degree in English this May.
