Biology Major
I chose Heidelberg because on my initial visit, it truly felt like home. As corny as that sounds, it is true! Everyone was so friendly, and campus was gorgeous. In addition to the great feel, the science program embodied everything I could have dreamed of. The cadaver lab, animal lab, and many research opportunities really made the decision an easy one for me.
I majored in Biology because I have dreamed of becoming a doctor since I was 5 years old. Majoring in biology at Heidelberg University has given me the opportunity to learn from amazing body donors in the cadaver lab, an experience that not many undergraduate universities even offer. I knew majoring in Biology would prepare me well for my future career.
A major challenge I encountered while at Heidelberg was having five major hip surgeries in three years. I handled this challenge by having amazing professors, family, friends, mentors, and coaches that have given me grace and have supported me through each step of the way.
Above all, Heidelberg prepared me to be mentally tough and accept the challenges that come with medical school and in my future career as a physician.
Outside of the classroom, I was involved in Chemistry Club, TriBeta, SCRUBS, assisting in the Longaker Animal Lab, and I was a HeidBabe!
My favorite extra-curricular activity was Chem Club because they provided me with many great experiences. With the Chem Club, I was able to help serve the community, share the love of science to many kids, go on trips to cool places, and hang out with a lot of amazing people.
One faculty or staff mentor or advisor who impacted my 'Berg experience is Nick Spell. While I have had the privilege of sharing these last four years with amazing science professors, Nick Spell has been someone I could go to every step of the way for any personal or academic issue. From getting injured on the soccer field freshman year, to being a student coach sophomore year, and now having Coach Spell as a mentor, he has impacted my 'Berg experience by always being someone I could trust and go to for life advice on any given situation.
My advice to new freshman me would be to relax and take everything in! Heidelberg has so much more to offer than just academics. Being involved in all aspects, meeting new people, and enjoying the fun all around is so worth it.
My favorite Heidelberg memory is meeting my now fiancé, Adam McVicker, early sophomore year and being able to spend every weekend at the baseball field supporting him and his teammates. My plans after graduation are to start medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in July.
