Music Education Major
I chose Heidelberg because of the welcoming environment created by the students and staff. Before I even committed, I already felt like I was a part of Heidelberg.
I majored in music education because I wanted to teach at a college level and continue to perform/write music.
A major challenge I encountered while at Heidelberg was time management. My class schedule made taking care of myself challenging. I handled this by prioritizing the things that mattered and purposefully making time for myself.
The best opportunity I discovered at Heidelberg was being able to write music for the Chamber Singers and having the opportunity to conduct the pit for Heidelberg's production of “Assassins.”
Outside of the classroom, I was involved in Marching Band, Choir, Chamber Singers, Jazz Band, numerous theatre productions, the Single Reed Studio, the Composition Studio, the Euglossian Society, OCMEA, Tau Mu Sigma, the Zeta Embers, the Rhos Buds and the Heidelberg New Music Association.
The thing I'm most proud of about My Heidelberg accomplishments is the connections and friendships I was able to make throughout my time.
Faculty or staff mentors or advisors who impacted my ‘Berg experience are Dr. Matthew Kennedy, Dr. Josh Heaney, and Professor Garrett Evans because I can't choose just one and their collective guidance is the reason I am prepared enough to continue my studies at the graduate level.
My advice to new freshman me would be to be your biggest advocate, make connections, don't be afraid to ask to be involved with things on campus.
My favorite Heidelberg memory is spending time with the saxophone section during Marching Band and my time with the Euglossian Society.
My plans after graduation are to attend the University of Hartford to obtain my MM in saxophone performance and music composition.
