Heidelberg University is a community, a family, comprised of as many personalities as there are people. With our “5 Things to Know” blog, you’ll get to know some of them. You’ll learn about their Heidelberg experience and other informative, fun – even quirky – anecdotes. Together, they tell the Heidelberg story.
Heidelberg wasn’t on the radar when Anthony Wise was looking at colleges. But he’s glad he finally answered texts and phone calls from his ‘Berg admission counselors. When he arrived from Chicago, he jumped in to try lots of different things. “I probably signed up for about 20 clubs,” he recalls. But Greek life wasn’t one of them – until he got to know some members of the Excelsior Men’s Society. “Something just clicked, and I’ve loved it ever since,” he says. And now he has a large group of brothers for life. In his final semester before graduation, this biology major and Spanish minor has his sights set on a career as an occupational therapist. He’ll take his upbeat attitude to grad school after working this summer to save money.
Learning from cadavers
Anthony understands the value of having the lab as part of his academics, even if Anatomy & Physiology courses have been super rigorous. “The experience working with an actual human body, working hands-on, you really learn more that way.”
Personal motivation
Back in 2015, Anthony’s mother suffered a stroke. Until that point, he was thinking of neurology as a career path. But after witnessing the work of a compassionate occupational therapist, who helped his mom regain her normal life, he changed his plans.
Answer your phone!
Anthony confesses to being one of those people who actually leaves voicemails when his friends don’t answer his calls. And to think, just four years ago, he was skipping right past calls from Heidelberg, including those from his Ex brother and former Admission staff member, Adam “Train” Hine, ’13!
The hotter, the better
Jalapenos and hot sauce are Anthony’s “go to” seasoning. “If I could, I would drink hot sauce, but people would think I was weird,” he says.
Larry 2.0
Speaking of obsessions, Anthony is enamored with turtles. Don’t ask why, he just is. “I had one as a pet for a little while, but I realized he’d do better in a different habitat.” So Larry 2.0, the turtle, got a new home.
