Where and when did you intern and what were your responsibilities?
Through Heidelberg I have had two different internships. My first one was with St. Francis in their Communication Department in Spring 2018. I was responsible for working collaboratively with the communication team to develop marketing strategy. I assisted with fundraising events, monitored and updated social media pages for the center and developed marketing materials for events. My second internship was with PollHall.com just last summer. I was responsible for making phone calls to persuade a business to join the website. Also, I made Excel spreadsheets of the information I attained from my phone calls. I attended an event to persuade people to look at or join the website.
What was the best part about your internship?
The best part of my internship for St. Francis was learning about the history of St. Francis and all the different things they do for Tiffin in and around the world. I also enjoyed getting to know the staff and the nuns on the St. Francis campus. One of my favorite activities was helping them prepare for their Mardi Gras fundraiser because I was able to do a lot of hands-on learning. For PollHall.com, my favorite part of the internship was making phone calls to businesses to join their website because it made me feel like I was making a true contribution to this organization.
How did your internship connect to your major and/or your planned career?
St. Francis connected to my future career plans by offering me experience in an office setting which I did not have before this time, and my future career goal is to work in an office for the government or a politician. It also helped me learn about the different jobs I could do with my minor in communication. The PollHall.com internship related to my major because the site was a non-partisan website working to help get candidates the tools they need and being a political science major this fit well with my major.
What advice would you give to current students considering an internship?
Look at every internship that is offered to you because you might not be interested now but that could be the internship that changes your whole life. Also, take every moment of your internship in to make sure you get the best learning experience possible.
