By the end of this week, nearly all of the major finishes will be completed as the Saurwein Health & Wellness Center is prepped for the arrival of fitness equipment and furniture in the near future.
Already, crews have installed a large portion of the flooring and much of the painting is complete, said Rod Morrison, associate vice president for facilities and engineering. Ceiling tiles will come this week.
Progress is swift these days as the university anticipates the project’s completion, grand opening in July and official dedication in September.
Those who visit the new facility will notice a decidedly Heidelberg motif in the carpeting, tile accents and other highlights. In the past months, large pendant lighting has been mounted and sleek silver handrails are in place at all of the stairs. One of the major undertakings – the installation of the elevator – also has been completed. The wellness kiosk has begun to take shape, as has the nutrition suite.
The center provides some picturesque views – from its grand entrance to the balcony overlooking the first-floor workout space. Perhaps one of the most striking views is at the rear of the facility that overlooks Heidelberg’s football field. Classroom and workout spaces also will look out onto the lower campus, which will be landscaped later this summer.
The university is planning to an official dedication ceremony and donor recognition event for Sept. 13.
The next step in furnishing the facility will be ordering furniture, which is scheduled to occur soon. Crews also have started to install the large patio that looks out onto the Mayer Field complex.
