Percussionist Scott Kretzer, bassist Paul Keller and pianist Cliff Monear will combine forces for a jazz trio performance at 8:15 p.m. April 9 at Heidelberg University’s Ohl Concert Hall.

While on campus, Keller and Monear will conduct a jazz clinic/workshop for Heidelberg students prior to their concert, which is free and open to the public.

Kretzer, who is an adjunct faculty member at Heidelberg, working with jazz combos, teaches in the northwest Ohio/southeastern Michigan area, specializing in applied percussion and world music. He performs regularly with the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra, Carl Cafagna and North Star Jazz, The Sixth Edition and the Murphy’s Place Jazz Orchestra. In 1991, he was inducted into the Yamaha Young Artist Program after winning the Drum Corps International solo snare drum competition. He has served as a percussion instructor and arranger in Japan and across the U.S.

Since 1989 Keller has led his 15-piece big band Paul Keller Orchestra, whose American Music Research Foundation Big Band Boogie Woogie concert was broadcast nationally on PBS from 2009-10. Its Jazz Student Outreach Program hosted 30 school bands and more than 600 student musicians in 2009. A prolific composer, Keller had a premiere of his five-movement symphonic composition, “The Ypslanti Orchestral Jazz Suite,” in October 2010. His magnum opus, “The Michigan Jazz Suite,” is a collection of 15 of his compositions inspired by people, places and icons of Michigan. Keller has shared the stage with pianist/vocalist Diana Krall and other jazz greats.

Currently on staff at Wayne State University, Monear has performed with international stars of many different musical genres. As a frequent performer in the Detroit area, he heads up his own jazz trip and is a regular accompanist for jazz vocalists and instrumentalists across the Midwest.
