Hilton Head, S.C. – March 15, 2011 – The Heidelberg University women’s tennis team was defeated, 9-0, to Smith College on Tuesday morning. The Berg drops to 1-4, while the Pioneers improve to 1-2 on the year.
Smith's Eunice Zhao posted a shutout with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Heidelberg's Taylor Stoll (Norwalk, Ohio / Madison) at No. 4 singles, while Gianna Teague (6-1, 6-0 over Deidre Potter (Chillicotche, Ohio / Union Scioto) at No. 1 and Maggie Steiner (6-0, 6-1 over Kayler Gerber (Clyde, Ohio / Clyde) at No. 2) also clinched a win for the Pioneers.
Allyson Hawkins went to three sets at No. 3 with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 win over Jackie Earl (Crestline, Ohio / Crestline), and Rachel Canfora defeated Linda Miller (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Union Scioto) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Szilvia B. Kiss won by default at No. 6.
Teague and Zhao beat Potter and Gerber 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Hawkins and Steiner defeated Earl and Stoll 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Julia Signell and Grace McKay-Corkum also won by default at No. 3.
