Wooster, OH – The Heidelberg Unviersty women’s tennis team took on the College of Wooster in their final competition of the fall on October 2, 2012. The Scots defeated the Berg, 5-4 in a closely contested match at the D.J. Hard Tennis Courts. Despite the loss, the Berg improved drastically from their 9-0 defeat a year ago.
Heidelberg’s number one racket-swinger, Deidre Potter (Chillicothe), lost her singles match to the Scot’s number one women, 6-1, 6-0. Potter teamed up with sophomore Katie Strahan (West Chester/Lakota East), who dropped her single match, 6-3, 6-2, for doubles action. The Berg’s top duo fell, 8-3 to the Scots.
Prior to her doubles loss, Strahan downed her singles opponent, 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Sophia Fugate (West Chester/Lakota East) played well in her second collegiate contest. Fugate was victorious in her singles match, 6-1, 6-4.
Fugate teamed up with sophomore Sara Potts (Clyde) for doubles competition. The underclassman duo fell, 8-4.
Potts was defeated in singles competition, 6-4, 6-0.
Sophomore Melissa Herrera-Ortiz (Moline, IL.) was the other Student Prince to take a singles match game from the Scots. Herrera-Ortiz won in dramatic fashion, taking the match into a tiebreaking third set.
Herrera-Ortiz took the first set, 6-4, only to drop the second, 4-6. The two ladies fought tough for the tiebreaker, but it was Herrera-Ortiz that swung her way to a 10-8 victory.
Wooster native, sophomore Erin Gorrell (Wooster/Triway), dropped her singles match, 6-0, 6-1, but earned the Berg’s second doubles victory with Herrera-Ortiz. The sophomore pair beat their Wooster counterparts, 8-4.
