Head coach Nick Spell and the Heidelberg University women’s soccer team have been searching for their first victory of the 2012 season. Against Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia they would earn just that. The Berg defeated the Bison, 2-1.
The Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead in the second minute, but that did not discourage the Heidelberg women.
Sophomore Rachel Gilbert (Chardon) quickly tied the game with her first goal of the season later in the second minute.
Sophomore Kristen Smith (Lancaster/Bloom Carroll) also earned her first goal of the season when Krista Blake (Geneva) served her with an assist, in the 26th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Julie Cross (Bowling Green) kept Bethany goalless for the remainder of the game, which earned Cross her first win of the season. She stopped eight shots for the Berg and has collected 44 saves so far this season.
“It was nice to get a win,” said Spell. “The team has been working very hard in practice so it’s good to finally get our first win,” Spell added.
The Heidelberg women will return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 25, when they travel to Hiram, Ohio to take on the Terriers of Hiram College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
