'Berg Soccer Teams Host OAC Foe Baldwin-Wallace on Tuesday and Wednesday

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s and women’s soccer teams will host Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio Athletic Conference matches on Tuesday, Oct. 11 and Wednesday, Oct. 12, respectively, at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio. Kickoff for both games is at 7 p.m. Tuesday’s men’s game will be broadcast live on the ‘Berg Athletics Network.  Jeff Garvin will have the call beginning at 6:45 p.m.

The Berg men’s team enters the match 2-6-4 overall and 0-2-1 in the OAC following a 1-0 loss to Muskingum University on Saturday. Through 12 matches this season, freshman midfielder Hamid Sheriff (Centennial) leads the team with five points on two goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Nicholas Samaniego (Huron) is second with three points on one goal and one assist.

In the net, junior two-time All-OAC goalkeeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) has played all 1,175 of the team’s minutes, making 56 saves and recording two shutouts. Smith is allowing 1.38 goals per 90 minutes and saving 75.7 percent of the shots he faces. The Texan is 1-1-0 in his career against Baldwin-Wallace with 13 saves.

The Yellow Jackets, ranked second in the Great Lakes Region prior to Tuesday’s release of the regional rankings, come to Tiffin riding a 12-match win streak and sporting 12-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 OAC records after defeating Otterbein University on Saturday. Carlin Vandendriessche, a two-time OAC player of the week this season, leads the conference with 11 goals and 26 points. He also has four assists to his credit. Manning the goal for B-W will be Ryan Hulings, who has made 13 saves and allows 1.06 goals per game in 1,107 minutes. Hulings owns an 11-1 record with three shutouts.

The Berg women come into Wednesday’s match with a 4-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 OAC record following their 1-0 shutout of Muskingum on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Aleseya Evans (Troy) scored the game-winner just 21 minutes into the contest, while junior Molly Schriber (Sidney) and sophomore Brittany Labry (Aurora/Twinsburg) teamed in goal for the combined shutout.

Heidelberg is led by sophomore midfielder Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati/Mariemont), who ranks the in the league’s top-10 in shots (38), points (nine) and goals (four). She also has an assist to her credit. Evans is second on the team with three goals. Senior midfielder Kristen Schneider (Evendale/Mount Notre Dame) is third with four points on two goals.

In goal, Schriber is 3-5-0 in 10 appearances. She has made 49 saves and allowed 14 goals in 632 minutes for a 2.00 goals against average. Labry has seen action in nine contests and has notched 22 saves while allowing 10 goals in 334 minutes for a 2.70 goals against average.

The Yellow Jacket women, 8-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the OAC, have won four of their last six matches, but fell to Otterbein, 1-0, on Saturday. Heather Keller leads the offense with 13 points on a team-high-tying four goals and team-best five assists, while three other student-athletes have notched at least two goals. Gabrielle Bodo is 4-5-0 in nine starts and has made 37 saves while allowing 14 goals in 783 minutes for a 1.61 goals against average.

Following their midweek games, both the Heidelberg men’s and women’s soccer teams will face the University of Mount Union on Saturday, Oct. 15 in OAC matches in Alliance.
