Tiffin, Ohio – September 28, 2010 - The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team, under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Nick Spell, matched its win total from last year as it defeated Defiance College tonight 1-0.
The Berg improves to 7-3, while the Lady Jackets fall to 2-4-2 on the season.
Senior Melissa Hamons (Northwood, Ohio / Central Catholic) made her first goal of her collegiate career an important one as she scored in the 40th minute. Senior Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) provided the assist with an excellent cross from the near side of the field.
The Lady Jackets had late chances in the second half, but they were denied from stellar saves by sophomore goalie Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood).
With a minute remaining, sister Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) contributed with remarkable blocks which prevented Defiance from scoring.
For the game, Heidelberg held a 14-7 shot advantage over the Lady Jackets.
Gross led the team with two shots on goal. Also earning a shot on goal was Hamons, freshman Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont), sophomore Krista Blake (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva), freshman Aleseya Evans (Troy, Ohio / Troy), and Bethany Mattern (Youngstown, Ohio / Austintown Fitch).
Next up for the Berg is its conference opener as it hosts Capital University on Saturday Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m.
