Austintown, Ohio – September 7, 2010 - Freshman midfielder Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont) of the Heidelberg University women’s soccer team has been selected as the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of September 8, 2010.
It is the first player of the week honor for Hogan and the first for the Heidelberg women’s soccer program since then sophomore Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) earned the honor for the week of September 15, 2008.
The Berg split its two games over the weekend at the Rhodes College Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee. After losing a 1-0 to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday, Heidelberg would rebound on Sunday to dominate the University of the Ozarks 5-1.
“After losing our season opener [against UW-Stevens Point], we felt that we needed to bounce back,” Hogan said. “We wanted to prove that we belonged to be there.”
Against the Ozarks, Hogan not only earned her first goal of her career, but earned a hat trick. Hogan put the first point of the game on the board in the 12th minute, then added two more in the 29th and 50th.
“I was excited,” said Hogan when asked about scoring a hat trick over the weekend. “But it’s not about how many goals I score, it’s about whether we win.”
Scoring multiple goals in a game is not unusual for Hogan. She once scored four goals in a game in high school.
Hogan leads the Berg in goals (3), shots (13), and shots on goal (five).
