Win Clinches OAC Tournament Berth

Alliance, Ohio – October 31, 2009 – The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team was victorious over Mount Union College with a score of 2-1. The win earns Heidelberg an OAC Tournament spot. The last time Heidelberg competed in the OAC tournament was in 1999. The Berg looks to add to its conference-leading fifth OAC title (’92, ’93, ’94, ’95, ’97).

Heidelberg finishes regular season play with a overall record of 7-11-1, 4-5 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders close out the season with a 5-13-1 overall record, 2-7 in the OAC.
 
Heidelberg was the first to score when Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville), in the 35th minute, received a cross inside the box from Krista Blake (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva), which then Gross placed the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Mount Union answered in the 38th minute when Deirdre Dick scored from a free kick from 20 yards out to knot up the game 1-1.

The Berg clinched the win in the 60th minute when Kelsey Taylor (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) connected with a through ball to Krista Blake, which then Blake dribbled past Mount Union’s goal keeper and scored the eventual game winning goal.

Overall, Heidelberg had an 11-8 shot advantage over the Purple Raiders. Krista Blake led the team with three points courtesy of a goal and an assist. Following Carolyn Gross who earned two shots including one goal was Shara Perry (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Davidson) who accumulated three shots with one on goal.

The Berg will face John Carroll University at University Heights, in the first round of the OAC tournament on Monday, November 2.
