The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team traveled to New Concord, Ohio to battle Ohio Athletic Conference opponent, the Muskingum University Muskies. Riding a four game losing streak in the OAC, the young team rallied around the efforts of two underclassmen, and defeated the Muskies, 1-0.
Freshman goalkeeper Julie Cross (Bowling Green) recorded her third shutout of the season by tallying five saves against the Muskies. Cross has amassed 111 saves in her first year as a Student Prince, which is second in the OAC to Marietta’s Kaitlyn Pearse.
After a scoreless first half, Heidelberg found the back of the net mid-way through the second half.
In the 63rd minute, it was sophomore Kristen Smith (Lancaster/Bloom Carroll) that netted the only goal of the contest. The goal marks Smith’s second of the season, which leads the team.
Classmmate Leeora Mohler (Marysville) served up the assist to Smith. The assist marks Mohler”s first of the season.
Sophomore Christina Neal (Kingston, TN/Roane County) added a shot of her own to the Berg offensive attack, along with freshman Shannon Angel (Hudson).
With the victory, the Heidelberg women move to 3-11-1 overall and 2-5 in the OAC.
The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team will return to action on Tuesday, October 23, when they travel to University Heights, Ohio to take on OAC foe John Carroll University. Kickoff from Don Shula Stadium, between the Berg ladies and the Blue Streaks is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
