The Heidelberg women's soccer team earned their first win of the 2013 season with a 3-1 victory over the Bison of Bethany College on a picturesque day at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
Junior forward Christina Neal came up large for the Student Princes yet again against the Bison of Bethany College, scoring twice on the afternoon. Neal knocked in the first Heidelberg goal in the 27th minute when she broke through the Bethany defense. With the ball at her feet she booted a right footed shot passed Cheyann McQuain, the Bison keeper, into the right side of the net.
Neal picked up her second goal of the afternoon and her third of the season with the Berg up 2-0 in the 58th minute. Neal received a pass from Heidelberg sophomore Shannon Angel and dribbled passed the Bethany keeper for the goal.
Neal finished with two goals on five shots against the Bison. Neal has collected three goals this season on eight shots. She leads the Berg offensive attack in 2013 followed by Brittany Yost and Christy Anzur who have each tallied one goal thus far.
Anzur found the second ‘Berg goal of the game with time running down in the first half. In the 36th minute, the Berg was awarded a corner kick which was deflected in the box by the Bethany defense. Anzur footed the ball off a volley and dropped it behind McQuain for the first goal of her Heidelberg career.
The Bison found their only goal of the contest in the 80th minute when Sarah London knocked in a pass from Julie Slezak.
The Student Princes tallied nine shots on goal against Bethany including two from Neal and one from Anzur. Freshmen Lindsay Marcum and Alex Sivec both collected one shot on goal along with sophomore Brittany Yost’s two shots on goal and junior Mackenzie Gable's one.
Senior goalkeeper Molly Schriber had a short day for the Student Princes as she only played 64 minutes in net before being replaced with sophomore Julie Cross. Schriber face six shots, saving all of them. Schriber has collected 38 saves in her senior campaign and boasts a save percentage of .809. Cross collected two saves in the win.
The Heidelberg women will travel to Manchester College to battle the Spartans on Wednesday, September 18. Kickoff from North Manchester, Ind. is slated for 4:00 p.m.
