ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Heidelberg University Wrestling Team lost their first Ohio Athletic Conference dual match of the season, 24-15 to Mount Union on Tuesday night.
Each team won five matches, but Mount Union grabbed nine bonus points for the win.
At the 125 weight class, Heidelberg (3-1 OAC) got on the board first. Delian Schneider (Tiffin/Columbian) defeated Brad Kress 7-5. The match marked Schneider's return to the line-up after an injury.
Mount Union's Jeremy Border defeated Justin Kihn (Kettering/Fairmont) 9-1 for a major decision at 133.
At 141, Mount Union continued to roll. Brandon Roby defeated Colin McDermitt (Lima/Shawnee) 13-4 for the second major decision in a row.
Johnston and Johnson met at 149, with the Purple Raiders taking six points. Tyler Johnston pinned Andrew Johnson (Weston/Otsego) in 5:43.
With Mount Union (3-1 OAC) leading 14-3, 157-pounder Jon Garrison added to the Purple Raider lead by beating Aaron Banko (Garfield Heights) 16-3. The major decision pushed the score to 18-3.
At 165, Heidelberg's Damon Cheek (Bellevue) was disqualified. Jeremy Regula took six points for Mount Union, who led 24-3.
The Student Princes regained momentum at 174. Jeremy Stepp (Cincinnati/Princeton) beat Brent Kirk, 3-1.
At 184, newcomer Richard Dowdley (Cleveland/Ginn Academy) continued his impressive first few weeks for the Student Princes by defeating Brian Deming, 9-5.
Andy Lovins (Clinton Township, MI/Lake Shore) won at 197 to continue Heidelberg's resurgence. He defeated Nick Rajcsak, 2-1.
Although Mount Union had already clinched the match, Nino Majoy (Huron) defeated Nick Terifaj, 2-1.
With the loss, Heidelberg moves into a second place tie with Mount Union.
Coincidentally, the Purple Raiders will be fervent supporters of Heidelberg next week. If the Student Princes can defeat Ohio Northern, all three schools will finish in a tie for first place in the OAC.
The ONU-Heidelberg match will take place next Tuesday in Seiberling Gymnasium. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
