Olivet, Mich. – November 20, 2010 – Under the guidance of first-year head coach Nathan Shearer, the Heidelberg University wrestling team posted a 3-1 record at the Comet Duals hosted by Olivet College inside the Cutler Event Center in Olivet, Mich. For the year, Heidelberg improved to 3-1-1.
The day began for the Berg with a 21-17 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. A 35-9 win followed against Manchester College before the Berg suffered a 30-12 setback to no. 2 ranked Wartburg College. Heidelberg bounced back against the nationally ranked with a 28-10 win over no. 22 Trine University.
In the win over UW-Whitewater, the Berg posted wins in five of the first seven weight classes to hold a 17-9 advantage. UW-Whitewater broke a streak of three consecutive ’Berg wins with major decisions at 184 and 197 to tie the match. Heidelberg heavyweight Jerry Knapp (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) did not falter in the end and topped James Zarate 4-1 to send the Berg to the victory column.
Freshman Richie Urias (Toledo, Ohio / Clay) registered a major decision at 125 in his first collegiate bout to get things started for the Berg. Nationally ranked Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) also posted a major at 174 pounds. Rounding out the victors for the Berg was nationally ranked Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) at 133 pounds, Cory Martinson (Brunswick, Ohio / St. Edwards) at 157 pounds and Jason Barnett (Westerville, Ohio / DeSales) at 165 pounds.
Against Manchester the freshman duo of Urias and Devin Mazik (Mingo Junction, Ohio / Indian Creek) made a statement early. Urias continued his impressive outing with a technical fall at 125 to set the stage for a fall by Mazik. Mazik pinned Andrew Micherman in 1:29 in his first collegiate bout.
Despite three straight decisions by Manchester, Heidelberg utilized forfeits at 165 and 285 to help seal the win. Posting wins between the forfeits was Curley with a technical fall at 174 pounds, Patrick Rigsby (Dublin, Ohio / St. Charles) with a decision at 184 pounds and Andy Lovins (Clinton Township, Mich. / Lake Shore) with a major at 197.
Against Wartburg, Ben Kieffer (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) pinned Michael Merritt in 2:20 at 141 pounds to pick up his first win on the day and pull the Berg within two points, 8-6, after three bouts. Wartburg went on to win five of the finals seven weight classes for the win. Posting hard fought one-point decisions in overtime was Martinson (157) and Curley (174).
The Berg bounced back in impressive fashion in its finale versus Trine. Heidelberg won seven of the 10 weight classes en route to a win. At 133 pounds, D’Alessandro recorded a fall in 2:51, while Martinson had a major at 157 to lead the way. Curley made it a 4-0 day with a 5-2 decision at 174 pounds. Joining Martinson at 3-1 on the day was Urias (125) and Knapp (285) with decisions. Picking up the final wins against Trine was Sean Pincura (Amherst, Ohio / Midview) (149) and Lovins (197).
