Ada, Ohio – February 26, 2011 – The Heidelberg University wrestling team, under the guidance of first-year head coach Nathan Shearer, overcame an injury plagued regular season to bring home a runner-up finish at the 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship hosted by Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio.
Heidelberg placed in seven of the 10 weight classes en route to 76 team points which was second to champion University of Mount Union’s 95.5. The host Polar Bears finished in third with 68 points following by Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carroll University with 49 and 48 points, respectively. Muskingum University (12.5) and Wilmington College (12.0) rounded out the field.
Leading the way on the podium was 133 pounder junior Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield). D’Alessandro claimed the championship for the second consecutive year and will make his second appearance at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in LaCrosse, Wis. March 11-12.
Joining D’Alessandro at nationals will be 149 pound sophomore Andrew Johnson (Weston, Ohio / Ostego). Johnson improved on his runner-up finish from a season ago and will be making his first trip to nationals.
Rounding out the all-conference performers was Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) and Jerry Knapp (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls). Curley was runner-up at 165 pounds and Knapp stood second at 285. It was the third consecutive all-league honor for Curley. Curley will make it three 'Berg grapplers at national courtesy of the conference's at-large bid. It will be Curley's third straight appearance at nationals.
Bringing home a third place finish was Chris Osborne (McComb, Ohio / McComb) (141) and Dayne Williams (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian) (174), while Jason Barnett (Westerville, Ohio / DeSales) (157) and Jason Russell (Columbus, Ohio /West) were fourth.
Heidelberg fared well in the quarterfinals. Registering two byes from the defending league champions D’Alessandro and Curley at 133 and 165 pounds, respectively, Heidelberg went on to post six victories.
Leading the way with falls was Johnson at 149 pounds, Williams at 174 pounds and Knapp at 285 pounds. Johnson took down Wilmington’s Tim Dettwiller in 2:11, while Williams had a fall over Chad Teague of Mount Union in 1:27. Knapp pinned Torrey McCray Jr. of Muskingum in 1:24.
At 157 pounds, Barnett opened with a 21-6 technical fall and Osborne blanked his opponent, 11-0, for a major decision at 149 pounds. Rounding out the first round victors for the Berg was Russell with a 4-1 decision at 197.

Devin Mazik (Mingo Junction, Ohio / Indian Creek) rebounded from an opening bout setback at 125 pounds to pin Shawn Feistamel of Muskingum in 5:18.

After a bye, top-seeded D’Alessandro came out with a 3-1 decision over fourth-seeded Michael Halko of Muskingum to advance to his second straight championship bout at 133 pounds. Following suit in the win column was Johnson at 149 pounds. Johnson, seeded third, upset number two seed Kenneth Hoopes of Ohio Northern, 6-3.
At 165 pounds, Curley was the two-seed and opened up action with a 6-2 decision over third-seeded John Piechuta of Mount Union.
Making it four in the finals was Knapp at 285. Knapp registered a 3-2 decision over Wilmington’s third-seeded Randy Swain.

After going 1-1 in his first two bouts, Osborne came back from a 4-1 loss in the semifinals to record a takedown in the final 20 seconds to win 4-2 over Baldwin-Wallace’s Grant Steward to find a spot in the third place match.
Also bouncing back from a semifinal loss was Barnett at 157 pounds. In the third period, with the score in favor of John Carroll’s Connor Suba by riding time, Barnett got a takedown to swing the momentum en route to a 9-6 win. Joining Barnett and Osborne in a third-place match was Williams and Russell. Williams advanced by forfeit, while Russell registered a hard-fought 3-2 decision at 197 pounds.

Osborne recorded three takedowns in the final period en route to a 12-7 decision over number two seeded Jonathon Hoopes of Ohio Northern in the first of four third place bouts for Heidelberg.
An escape in the third period led to a 1-0 decision for Baldwin-Wallace’s Korey Leonhard over Barnett at 157 pounds.
Williams came out strong in the second period with a three-point near fall to erase a 2-0 deficit against third-seeded Todd Gaydosh of John Carroll. In the end, Williams added a point for riding time for a 4-2 decision.

Heidelberg’s D’Alessandro opened up with two takedowns in the first period to set the tone for the 133 pound championship bout with third-seeded Phillip Payne of Baldwin-Wallace. D’Alessandro added two more takedowns and an escape, to go along with riding time en route to a 10-2 major decision and his second straight 133 pound title.
In the 149 pound championship, Mount Union’s top-seeded Kevin Shadrach held a 2-1 lead over Heidelberg’s Johnson. An illegal move by Shadrach gave a victory to Johnson and his first conference title.
The 165 pound championship featured two nationally ranked foes in Heidelberg’s Curley and Ohio Northern’s Luke Miller. In a tight battle, Miller registered a takedown in the final two seconds to upset the two-time defending champion.
The day closed with a closely contended 285 pound match between the top-seeded Derick Hesson of Mount Union and Heidelberg’s Knapp. Hesson got a third period takedown and a point from riding time to post the win.
