Tiffin, Ohio – February 10, 2011 – Seniors Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) and Dayne Williams (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian) of Heidelberg University found the win column on senior night, but it was not enough for a team victory over the University of Mount Union. In the end, the Purple Raiders posted victories in seven of the 10 weight classes for a 30-12 victory. The win improved Mount Union, who is ranked eighth in the nation, to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Berg falls to 9-9-2, 2-2. Tonight’s dual was originally scheduled for last Tuesday but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Prior to the start of the dual Heidelberg recognized its 2011 seniors for their contributions to the wrestling program over the course of the last four years. Curley and Williams have been instrumental in bringing home three OAC Tournament titles and one OAC Regular Season trophy, along with helping the team rank among the nation’s elite in the classroom.
Mount Union opened up to an 18-0 advantage following four straight wins. Jason Barnett (Westerville, Ohio / DeSales) got the Berg on the board with a 6-4 decision at 157 pounds.
In his final home dual of his career Curley registered a 12-7 decision at 165 pounds to improve his team-best record to 32-6 and stayed unbeaten at 3-0 in the OAC.
Williams backed Curley’s senior leadership and made quick work of his opponent in the 174 pound weight class. After an early takedown and three-point near fall, Williams took down Jeremy Hathaway and made it stick in 1:29. After seven weight classes, Mount Union’s early lead dwindled to six points, 18-12.
Mount Union responded by winning the final three weight classes to post the win.
