Lycoming, Pa. – January 15, 2011 – The Heidelberg University wrestling team posted a 3-2 record at the annual Budd Whitehall Duals the weekend. Lycoming College in Lycoming, Pa. was the host institution of the two-day tournament.
Heidelberg opened with a 20-15 setback to no. 12 York College on Friday. The Berg responded with a 23-18 victory over no. 29 Messiah College and a 38-8 victory over King’s College, before dropping a hard fought 19-18 dual to no. 28 Wabash College. The weekend concluded with a 30-12 victory over no. 21 Springfield College. For the year, the Berg is 7-7-2 overall.
A trio of Berg grapplers posted a perfect 5-0 mark for the tournament. Battling back from an injury plagued start to the year, junior Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) provided vital points in the lower weight classes. At 133 pounds he had five wins, including three major decisions.
Holding down the upper weight classes with 5-0 records was senior Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) and sophomore Andy Lovins (Clinton Township, Mich. / Lake Shore) at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively. Curley’s weekend was highlighted by four major decisions to help increase his team-best overall record to 18-1. Lovins perfect outing improved his overall record to 16-2.
Finishing the two-day tournament with three wins apiece was juniors Sean Pincura (Amherst, Ohio / Midview), Dayne Williams (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian) and Jerry Knapp (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls), as well as sophomore Andrew Johnson (Weston, Ohio / Otsego). Knapp controlled the 285 pounds weight class with two falls and a technical fall to improve to 12-2 on the year. Johnson had two falls at 149 pounds, while Pincura had a technical fall and a major decision at 157 pounds.
