YPSILANTI, Mich.—Sophomore Jeremy Stepp (Cincinnati/Princeton) posted a fourth-place finish to highlight the Heidelberg University wrestling team at the Eastern Michigan Open today in Ypsilanti, Michgan. The Student Princes totaled 85 points in the freshman/sophomore division and tallied 13 points in open competition to place 20th among 24 teams in both divisions.
As a team, Heidelberg faced NCAA Division I opponents in 24 matches and recorded 12 wins overall.
After receiving a first-round bye in the 174-pound freshman/sophomore bracket, Stepp won two straight decisions to advance to the championship semifinals before bowing to Lucas Sheridan of Indiana University. Stepp then took another decision in the consolation semifinals, but lost a major decision, 11-0, to take fourth place. Stepp racked up a team-best 15 points.
Sophomore 184-pounder Jason Russell (Columbus/West), wrestling in the 197-pound weight class, also advanced to the championship semifinals with a first-round decision and quarterfinal-round pin. Russell went on to take sixth place.
Also winning matches for the Berg were freshman 133-pounder Steve Harmon (Westlake), sophomore 141-pounder Chris Osborne (McComb) (two), freshman 141-pounder J.C. Giffin (Painesville/Fairport Harding), sophomore 165-pounder Jake Cochran (West Jefferson)—who was wrestling in the 184-pound weight class—and freshman 285-pounder Tyler Smith (Calhoun/Sonoraville) (two).
The ‘Berg grapplers return to the mat Tuesday, Nov. 8 for a dual match with Olivet (Mich.) College at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin at 7 p.m.
