The Heidelberg women’s golf team had a busy week as they competed in the Trine Fall Classic on September 12, followed by a two day outing at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational on September 14 and 15.
The Heidelberg ladies were led by stand out freshman Lia Hodge who carded an 83 (40-43) at the Trine Fall Classic at Zollner Golf Club in Angola, Ind. Hodge followed her low eighties performance with by carding an 83 on Saturday a 92 on Sunday at Safari Golf Club in Powell, Ohio for a two round total of 175.
“Lia has been a very big, bright young talent for us, with her consistency,” said head coach Dan Hartsel, who is in his second year as head coach of the women’s team.
Individually, Hodge finished in a tie for third in Angola and tied for 25th place in Powell while the Student Princes placed tenth in Indiana and sixth at Ohio Wesleyan.
At the Trine Fall Classic, junior Rachel Huth finished closely behind Hodge, shooting a 97 (48-49). Senior Heather Lentz (53-49) and freshman Kerianne Murphy (52-50) shot a pair of 102’s, while freshman Natalie Durtchi carded a 104 (53-51).
In Powell, Murphy carded a two round total of 177 by shooting an 89 on Saturday followed by an 89 on Sunday. Lentz shot 91 on Saturday with a 99 on Sunday for a two round total of 190 to finish in the third spot for the Berg. Huth and Durtchi rounded out the Berg golfers shooting a 194 (97-97) and 199 (98-101) respectively.
"I'm pleased with where our freshman women are at this point in the year,” said Hartsel “I think their contributions early are helping to define the direction that the program is heading,” he added.
The Heidelberg men took the weekend off in preparation for the Poppa Flowers Memorial Invitational on Monday, September 16. The Flowers Memorial was hosted by John Carroll University at the highly regarded Shaker Height Country Club in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
On the men’s side, the Student Princes were led by freshman Andrew Martinez, who carded a ten over par 81 (39-42). Sophomore Jack Eifel and freshman Chase Kloeppel were the only other Student Princes to shoot in the sub-90’s at Shaker, finishing with an 84 (43-41) and an 86 (40-46) respectively.
Sophomore Chase Hushour and freshman Justin Lutes rounded out the Berg’s five golfers at the Flowers Memorial. Hushour carded a 96 (46-50) while Lutes shot a 99 (48-51) for Heidelberg.
John Carroll swung their way to victory at Shaker Heights with a combined team score of 303 followed closely by the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets who finished with a 305.
The Heidelberg women will return to action when they travel to Wooster, Ohio to compete in the Wooster invitational on September 21 and 22. Tee times for Saturday are slated for 10:00 p.m.
The Berg men will hit the practice range hard over the next few days as they gear up for the Ohio Athletic Conference Fall Invitational at Columbia Hills Country Club on September 21 and 22. Tee times for both Saturday and Sunday are TBA.
