TIFFIN – Heidelberg University Director of Athletics Matt Palm announced Tuesday that Morgan Shriver has been named the head women’s basketball coach. A 2009 ‘Berg graduate, Shriver is the ninth head coach in the 47-year history of women’s basketball at the university.
Shriver just completed her second year as an assistant for the program. While obtaining a master’s degree in education, she was the head junior varsity coach and assisted in all aspects of the varsity team.
“We are excited about the direction that Morgan will lead this program,” said Palm. “She has presented a vision that will emphasize high academic standards, personal growth and success on the court that is consistent with the vision of Heidelberg University.”
She becomes the fourth Heidelberg alum to take the reins of the program, joining Karen Weller Roby ’68, Jerry Buccilla ’84 and Karen McConnell ’85.
As a student at Heidelberg, Shriver was a sport management and health and physical education double-major and a member of the Honors Program. On the court, she was a four-year letterwinner and holds the Heidelberg record with seven 3-pointers in a game. She was an Academic All-OAC honoree three times, twice for basketball and once for tennis.
“I’m honored to have the privilege and opportunity to coach at my alma mater,” said Shriver. “I want to focus on developing the complete student-athlete – academically, socially and athletically.”
Shriver, an Urbana native, inherits a youthful roster full of promising talent. Rising senior Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary’s), the two-time defending conference scoring leader, will continue her climb up the all-time scoring list. Phillips sits in ninth place with 1,196 points.
“With a commitment to discipline, dedication and pride, our team will make some noise in the always-competitive Ohio Athletic Conference,” concluded Shriver.
