NEW CONCORD, Ohio - An 18-4 run by Muskingum University over a 4:30 stretch of the second half was too much for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team to overcome. The Muskies won the game, 68-54.
Junior Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary's) scored 15 points for Heidelberg. Classmate Emily Giel (Burton/Berkshire) added 11 points for the Student Princes, who fell to 5-8, 1-5 in the OAC.
The Muskies (6-7, 1-5 OAC) lead 28-21 at halftime, but Heidelberg opened the second half on a 16-9 run. Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian) tied the game for Heidelberg with a layup.
Muskingum coach Beth Fox called a timeout to halt the 'Berg momentum -- and her plan worked.
After the timeout, the Muskies broke out with their 18-4 run, which effectively sealed the game.
Muskingum had four players in double figures, led by Jendy Weppler's 15 points. Hannah Nelson added a double-double for the Muskies, as she finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Miller led Heidelberg with nine rebounds. Freshman Erin Sims (Newark/Central Catholic) added three blocked shots off the bench.
Heidelberg hosts a pair of conference games next week. Tip-off against Ohio Northern is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and at 3 p.m. against Otterbein on Saturday.
