‘Berg Women’s Basketball Begins Three-Game Week with Case Western Reserve on Monday

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team opens a week in which it will play three games in six days on Monday, Dec. 5 when it hosts Case Western Reserve University in a non-conference game at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on the ‘Berg Athletics Network (http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/heidelberg.portal#) beginning with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m. Jeff Garvin and Drew Felton have the call. Facing a tight turnaround after playing on Saturday, the Berg (2-4, 0-1 Ohio Athletic Conference) faces the Spartans following a 67-54 loss to Wilmington College in its OAC opener.

Sophomore guard Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary’s) led Heidelberg, which lost consecutive games for the first time this season, with 11 points on five-of-12 shooting. Freshman guard Paige Ricketts (Mineral City/Tusky Valley), who is averaging 9.0 points per game over her last two contests, added eight points and sophomore guard Emily Giel (Burton/Burkshire) and junior forward Molly Schriber (Sidney) each tallied seven markers. Schriber also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Despite the loss, Heidelberg turned the ball over a season-low 14 times.

Phillips averages a team-best 17.2 ppg. and leads the team in field goal percentage at 41.0 (32-of-78), free-throw percentage at 79.2 (19-of-24) and steals with 12. Joining Phillips in the backcourt are sophomore guard Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian) and junior guard Jordan Ickes (Wooster/Triway), who score 8.8 and 8.7 ppg., respectively. Miller also tallies 5.2 rebounds per game, while Ickes is a 40.8 percent (20-of-49) shooter. Heidelberg scores 60.2 ppg. and pulls down 34.8 rpg.

CWRU (4-3, 0-0 University Athletic Association) has had a week between games following a 57-54 edging of John Carroll University on Nov. 30. Brooke Orcutt made the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer and Evy Jacono was one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring a game-high 14 points and matching a game-high with nine boards.

The Spartans are led by Hollinger (12.7 ppg., 4.7 rpg.) and Iacono (12.1 ppg., 4.4 rpg.) and have four players who shooter better than 40 percent from the field. Chelsea Peck, who averages 7.6 ppg., shoots a team-high 66.7 percent (20-of-30). Hollinger also has blocked a team-high 13 shots, while Iacono has dished 22 assists to lead the team. CWRU scores 59.1 ppg, averages 38.0 rpg. and shoots 40.1 percent (165-of-411).

Following Monday’s game, the Berg will play two straight road games, facing OAC foes Baldwin-Wallace College on Wednesday, Dec. 7 and Muskingum University on Saturday, Dec. 10.
