Women’s Hoops Hosts ONU Wednesday in Final Home Game of Season

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team will close the home portion of its 2011-12 regular season schedule Wednesday, Feb. 8 when it hosts Ohio Northern University in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Heidelberg (4-17, 1-13 OAC) is looking to snap an eight-game losing streak following a 64-50 loss Saturday at Capital University. Despite the loss, sophomore guard Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary’s) poured in a game-high 21 points and sophomore guard Emily Giel (Burton/Burkshire) added nine points.

Fourth-year head coach Marcie Alberts will likely run a five-guard set with Phillips, Giel and sophomore Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian), junior Jordan Ickes (Wooster/Triway) and senior guard Jazmine Shaw (Columbus/Hamilton Township). Phillips scores an OAC-best 18.0 points per game and pulls down 3.6 rpg., is second in the conference with an 83.6 (97-of-116) free throw percentage and is tied for sixth with 45 steals. Miller averages 8.2 ppg. and leads the team with 4.9 rpg. Giel scores 7.7 ppg., leads the team with 32 assists, and is seventh in the league with a 34.2 (38-of-111) three point shooting percentage. Ickes scores 6.3 ppg., is second on the team with 31 assists and third with a 36.1 (52-of-144) shooting percentage. Shaw averages 2.6 ppg. and 3.0 rpg.

The Berg scores 60.0 ppg., pulls down 36.7 rpg. and shoots 34.0 percent overall.

ONU (18-3, 12-2 OAC) has won seven straight contests following an 83-73 win Saturday at Marietta College. Cenzie Yoder poured in 22 points and Joanna Snyder added 19 points of her own, while Kara Dysert chipped in 13 and eight rebounds, as the Polar Bears shot 50.0 (32-of-64) percent from the field against the Pioneers.

Ninth-year head coach Michele Durand will likely start guards Morgan Dumbaugh and Katie Mengos and forwards Kara Dysert, Cenzie Yoder and Joanna Snyder. Dumbaugh is ninth in the OAC with 13.5 ppg. and a 47.8 (98-of-205) shooting percentage, and fourth with a 39.0 (32-of-82) three point shooting percentage and 81.2 (56-of-69) free throw percentage. Dysert is 10th in the league with 12.6 ppg., third with 8.7 rpg. and a 52.5 (95-of-181) shooting percentage, fifth with an 81.1 (73-of-90) free throw percentage and second with 29 blocks. Yoder averages 11.0 ppg., ranks 10th in the conference with 6.4 rpg. and 62 assists and is fifth with a 51.7 (92-of-178) field goal percentage. Snyder scores 10.0 ppg. and pulls down 4.3 rpg. Mengos tallies 4.6 ppg. and has passes for 64 assists.

The Polar Bears are second in the OAC in scoring (67.3 ppg.) and field goal percentage (44.3), lead the circuit in free throw shooting (75.1), are third in field goal percentage defense (57.4) and three point shooting (31.9) and pull down 38.7 rpg.

ONU is 9-1 in the series’ last 10 meetings and has won five straight. In the last meeting between the two teams, a 75-53 ONU win in Ada, Phillips poured in a then-career-high 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Kara Dysert tallied 10 points and nine rebounds and led eight Polar Bears who scored at least five points, as ONU shot 50.0 (28-of-56) percent from the field and held a 44-32 advantage on the glass.

Following Wednesday's game, the Berg will wrap up its 2011-12 regular season with three straight road contests, beginning Saturday, Feb. 11 at Marietta.
