Tiffin, Ohio – December 30, 2010 – Senior forward Kristen McConkey (New Carlise, Ohio / Tecumseh) had a career night to help lead the Heidelberg University women’s basketball team to a 69-58 non-conference victory over Oberlin College in Seiberling Gymnasium. The win improved the Berg to 1-9 overall, while the Yeowomen fall to 4-6.
McConkey shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, while adding two points from the charity stripe to post a career-high 16 points. She hauled in a career-best 13 rebounds to register her first collegiate double-double. McConkey rounded out her performance with three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Backing McConkey was freshman point guard Emily Giel (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire) with a career and game-high 19 points. Giel connected on four treys to assist in her career outing. Rounding out three in double figures for the Berg was senior forward Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) with 10 points. For the year, Miller has recorded double figures in nine outings, including eight straight. Miller added nine boards on the night.
For the game, Heidelberg shot a season-best 42.4 percent (25-of-59), while its defensive pressure held the Yeowomen to 36.2 percent (21-of-58). On the glass, the Berg held a 42-37 advantage.
Leading three in double figures for Oberlin was Allison Anderson with 17 points, to go along with eight assists and seven rebounds.
Oberlin’s Anderson hit a jumper with just over a minute to play in the first half to give the Yeowomen a 34-32 advantage at the intermission.
In the second half, Miller hit two free throws to break a 43-43 tie and more importantly gave the Berg the lead for good. Heidelberg extended its lead to nine, 59-50, following a Jordan Ickes (Wooster, Ohio / Triway) layup. Oberlin answered with a trey on the opposite end with 5:43 left in the game.
Heidelberg went on to outscore Oberlin 10-5 over the final 5:24 to post the win. During its scoring spurt down the stretch, the Berg led by as many as 14 points.
