Las Vegas, Nev. – December 20, 2010 – The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team dropped a 67-50 decision to SUNY Oneonta at the Trip Sports Las Vegas Hoopla in Las Vegas, Nev. this afternoon, December 20. The setback drops the Berg to 0-8 overall, while Oneonta improves to 8-0.
Heidelberg and Oneonta battled back and forth through the early part of the contest. With the game tied for the fifth time, 22-22, Oneonta went on a 9-2 run to close the opening half with a 31-24 advantage.
Oneonta opened the second half on a 7-0 run to increase its lead to 14 points, 38-24. Heidelberg’s Chelsey Calhoun (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River) quieted the run with a trey to cut the Berg’s deficit to 11 with 17:02 left in the contest. But that would be as close as Heidelberg would get.
For the game, Heidelberg suffered a tough shooting day from the field, connecting on just 15-of-60 attempts (25.0%), while Oneonta hit 24-of-52 shots (46.2%). Oneonta also held a 48-28 advantage on the glass.
Leading the way for Heidelberg was Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) and Emily Giel (Burton, Ohio / Burkshire) with 13 points apiece. Miller hauled in a team-leading six boards, to go along with two steals. Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky, Ohio / St. Mary’s) came off the bench to record eight points, five steals and three assists.
Heidelberg concludes action at the Las Vegas Hoopla tomorrow when it faces Hanover College at 12:00 PST.
