'Berg Ends 2010-11 Season at Mount Union

Alliance, Ohio – February 19, 2011 – The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team, under the guidance of third-year head coach Marcie Alberts, ended its 2010-11 season with a loss to the University of Mount Union with a score of 86-57.

The Berg finishes the year with a 1-24 overall record, while unable to capture an OAC win. The Purple Raiders improves to 22-3 overall and 15-3 against league foes. Mount Union already clinched the number one seed in the OAC Tournament and will continue its season next Tuesday (Feb. 19) as it host no. 8 seed Otterbein University at 7:30 p.m.

In the first half at the 4:08 mark, after being down by as many as 10 points, the Berg battled back and narrowed Mount Union’s lead down to 34-32 when senior Kristen McConkey (New Carlisle, Ohio / Tecumseh) split a pair of free throws.

The Purple Raiders, however, went into halftime up 45-37 and would lead in double digits for the rest of the contest.

For the game, Heidelberg shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the floor, while Mount Union hit 48.3 percent (28-of-58). On the glass, Mount Union held a 40-38 advantage.

Leading on offense for the Berg was freshman Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky, Ohio / Saint Mary’s) who scored a career-high 20 points. Following was McConkey and senior Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) with seven and six points, respectively.

McConkey gathered in a game-high eight rebounds. Also contributing on the glass was junior Chelsey Calhoun (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River) with six boards.

Rosa LaMattina led four in double figures for Mount Union with 19 points. Following LaMattina was Amanda Rose (14), Katie Crider (13), and Brittany Kilgore (10). Lauren Forquer led the team with five rebounds.
