Tiffin, Ohio – February 16, 2011 – Despite having a first half lead, the Heidelberg University women’s basketball fell short to Otterbein University, 67-65, on Senior Night in an electrifying atmosphere in Seiberling Gymnasium. The Berg falls to 1-23 overall and 0-17 in the OAC, while the Lady Cardinals improve to 10-13 overall and 6-10 against league foes.
The battle of the two OAC teams consisted of 12 lead changes and three ties.
Heidelberg took an early 10-4 lead in the first half when freshman Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky, Ohio / St. Mary’s) made a fast break jumper. Senior Kristen McConkey (New Carlisle, Ohio / Tecumseh) earned the assist.
After Otterbein narrowed the Berg’s lead down to one, Heidelberg would go on a 7-2 run which was topped off my Phillips scoring on a three-point play bringing the score to 17-11, in favor of the Berg.
Otterbein took its first lead of the night at the 6:04 mark when Hannah Day scored on a long range shot, giving Otterbein a 20-17 lead.
The Berg went ahead 27-24 with 3:51 left before halftime when senior Carrie Serrano (Cleveland, Ohio / Rhodes) drained one of her three first half three-pointers. Senior Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) earned the assist.
The Berg went into halftime up, 30-29.
Five minutes into the second half, Otterbein went on top, 35-33, following a three pointer from Kristi Kotterman. The Lady Cardinals stayed ahead the duration of the game.
Heidelberg had a chance with four seconds on the clock, but it turned the ball over on the inbound pass.
Miller led three in double figures with 21 points. Following Miller was Phillips and sophomore Jordan Ickes (Wooster, Ohio / Triway) with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Ickes’ 12 points marked her career-high.
McConkey crashed the boards with a game-high 13 rebounds. Also contributing was Serrano with nine points, all from three-pointers.
Heidelberg closes out the 2010-11 season at the University of Mount Union on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2:00 p.m.
