'Berg Drops Hard Fought Road Game

University Heights, Ohio – January 19, 2011 – The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team dropped a 76-64 Ohio Athletic Conference game to host John Carroll University this evening at the DeCarlo Center in University Heights, Ohio. The loss drops the Berg to 1-15 overall and 0-9 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks improve to 9-7 and 4-5.

Heidelberg broke a 4-4 tie with a 12-5 run to build a seven-point advantage, 16-9, with 12:04 on the clock in the first half. John Carroll battled back to force two more ties that aided an exchange of the lead on seven occasions. JCU went on to build a double-digit lead at 32-22 in the final minute. Heidelberg cut its deficit to single-digits, 33-25, at the half following a Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky, Ohio / St. Mary’s) three-pointer.

John Carroll extended its lead to as many as 18 points in the second half, but the Berg did not quit. Behind 10 points from Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) and a couple from long range by Carrie Serrano (Cleveland, Ohio / Rhoades), Heidelberg pulled within nine points, 73-64, with 1:13 left in the game. The Berg was held scoreless the remainder of the game, while JCU connected on 3-of-4 from the line to push the final score to 76-64.

For the game, Heidelberg shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64), topping John Carroll’s 37.5 percent (24-of-64). Both sides were even on the glass with 44 boards apiece.

Miller led the Berg with a double-double consisting of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Making it three in double figures with 11 points apiece was Phillips and Chelsey Calhoun (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River).

John Carroll was led by Emilee Ritchie and Lee Jennings with 27 and 23 points, respectively. Melissa Spahar led the way on the glass with seven rebounds.
