Heidelberg Falls at Home

Tiffin, Ohio – January 8, 2010 – The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team could not maintain a quick start in an Ohio Athletic Conference women’s basketball contest with Marietta College. In the end the visiting Pioneers posted a 72-56 victory in Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg. The setback drops the Berg to 1-12 overall and 0-6 in the OAC, while Marietta improved to 7-6 and 3-3.

A Casey Bishop (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville) three-pointer with 6:42 on the clock in the opening half gave Heidelberg an early 14-point advantage, 24-10. Pacing the Berg during its early spurt was Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) and Chelsey Calhoun (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River) with a combined 13 points.

Marietta finally got on track and connected from long range on three consecutive possessions en route to eventually holding a slim 31-28 advantage at the intermission.

Emily Giel (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire) got things going with a trey on back-to-back possessions to put Heidelberg up by two, 34-32, less than a minute into the second half.

Heidelberg and Marietta went on to trade possessions with the Pioneers controlling the scoreboard on the second trade. Marietta withstood a 41-41 tie courtesy of an 11-2 run to take control of the contest.

For the game, Heidelberg connected on 18-of-53 shots (34.0%), while Marietta hit 21-of-49 of its shots (42.9%). The Pioneers outrebounded the Berg, 40-31.

Miller led the way for the Berg with 19 points, to go along with four blocks, three steals, three assists and two rebounds. Giel added 13 points and Jordan Ickes (Wooster, Ohio / Triway) finished with nine. Calhoun also chipped in with eight. Kristen McConkey (New Carlisle, Ohio / Tecumseh) led the way on the glass with eight rebounds.

Mallory Hoff paced three in double figures for Marietta with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Aleisha Guiler hauled in 11 rebounds.
