'Berg Cannot Sustain Quick Start

Tiffin, Ohio – January 2, 2010 – The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team jumped out to an 18-9 lead over the first eight minutes of the game, but could not sustain the momentum and dropped a 70-59 decision to Denison University today, January 2, 2010, at Seiberling Gymnasium.

Today’s contest marked the first for the Berg in the New Year and is the first setback in four games at home. Overall Heidelberg boasts a record of 3-9, while Denison upped its record to 10-1.

In the first half, Denison cut Heidelberg’s early lead to one, 26-25, with 4:12 on the clock. The Big Red closed out the half outscoring the Berg 13-6 to hold a 38-32 advantage at the intermission.

Heidelberg’s Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) opened the scoring in the second half to pull the Berg within four points at 38-34, but that would be as close as the Berg would get. Denison led by as many as 13 points en route to the win.

Despite the loss, Heidelberg dominated the glass, outrebounding Denison 55-35. The Berg hauled in 30 offensive boards. From the field, Denison outshot the Berg 38.7 percent (24-of-62) to 29.4 percent (20-of-68).

Producing double-doubles for the Berg was Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) and Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing). It was the second-straight double-double for Miller who finished with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Nine of Miller’s 12 rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor, while she connected on 10-of-14 free throws. Richard tallied 11 points and a career-high 13 boards for her first double-double of the season.

Shrider finished with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks, while freshman Jordan Ickes (Wooster, Ohio / Triway) had a career-high eight points, to go along with four assists and three rebounds in her first collegiate start.

Denison had three players in double figures led by Shaina Kaiser with 18 points. Jessica Grzybowski had a team-leading 10 rebounds.
