TIFFIN – For Heidelberg University volleyball senior Amber Welfle, it was almost a perfect night. Her parents celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary and she reached the 1,000 kill milestone. Unfortunately, the Student Princes could not emerge with a win, falling in five sets to Defiance (25-19, 15-25, 25-14, 26-28, 15-13).
Welfle led Heidelberg (2-5) with 18 kills, followed by Jamie Kluding’s 12 and Sarah Parker’s 10 kills.
Defiance (8-2) took the first set by hitting .333 as a team. Alexis Pierce finished with 19 kills, one of five Yellow Jackets in double-figures.
The Berg responded to take the second set, forcing Defiance into an attack percentage of -.024.
After dropping the third set, Heidelberg needed extra points to win the fourth set to set up the fifth set.
In the fifth set, Heidelberg grabbed an early 3-0 lead and led 8-6 as the teams switched sides. Defiance went on a run and controlled the remainder of the match.
Defensively, Jubilee Haase led the Student Princes with 16 digs. Parker recorded four blocks.
For Defiance, setter Alicia Kalik controlled the court, serving up 60 assists.
The loss is the first in a home-opener for Heidelberg since 2004, when they fell to Defiance.
The Student Princes will travel to Wittenberg on Friday. There, they will play nationally ranked opponents Calvin, Hope and Washington.
