Heidelberg University’s volleyball team headed into the Friday night match against Marietta College winners of 21 straight regular-season OAC contests. The Pioneers (13-4, 2-0) made quick work of the Student Princes (13-6, 2-1), as they won 25-23, 25-23,25-21.
Senior Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, MI) dished out 18 assists to led Heidelberg. Classmate Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) led the team with nine kills.
Defensively, sophomore libero Tessa Benanzer (Fort Loramie) had 16 digs and junior Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) had five blocks.
Both teams attacked at a .191 clip, as Marietta’s Alex VanGundy and Paige DeVriendt led all players with 14 and 13 kills.
Heidelberg will look to rebound on Tuesday, in a non-conference match at Bluffton.
