Austintown, Ohio – November 1, 2010 – For the second week in a row, and the third time this season, a member of the Heidelberg University volleyball team has earned a weekly accolade from the Ohio Athletic Conference. Freshman middle hitter Amber Welfle (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) has been tabbed the OAC Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 1, 2010. It is the first weekly honor for Welfle and she joins Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) and Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) as 2010 honorees.
In a 3-2 week for Heidelberg, Welfle led the team with a .339 hitting percentage, while standing second with 51 kills, eight service aces and third with 10 blocks.
The week began with a 3-1 win over Ohio Northern University on Tuesday. Welfle contributed a career-high 15 kills, to go along with three block assists and an ace. Her effort helped to lead the Berg to the outright OAC title for the second straight year.
Welfle returned on Friday with 11 kills, four blocks and an ace in a five-set loss to no. 10 ranked Carthage College at the Carthage Tournament.
She closed out action at the Carthage Tournament hitting over .400 in the final three matches. Included in the mix was sweeps over Trinity University and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where she hit .667 and .412, respectively. Against UW-Oshkosh Welfle served up three aces.
Heidelberg, ranked 13th in the nation, stands at 29-5 overall and have earned the no. 1 seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament. The Berg will host Muskingum University Nov. 2 in a 7:00 p.m. quarterfinal match in Seiberling Gymnasium.
