Heidelberg Goes 3-1 at IWU

Bloomington, Ill. – October 2, 2010 – The no. 12 Heidelberg University volleyball team improved to 19-3 overall following a 3-1 showing at the Barker Chevrolet Tournament II hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University Oct. 1-2.

Heidelberg opened up the weekend with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 16-25, 25-17) win over Alma College. Next up was a 3-1 (28-26, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20) setback to Millikin University. Millikin received votes in the latest national poll. Day two featured a sweep (25-5, 25-13, 25-9) of Robert Morris-Peoria and a 3-1 win over host IWU (25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20).  

For the tournament, All-American libero Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) finished the weekend with 98 digs and three services aces to land a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Against Alma, Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) and Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) each posted double-doubles. Haase finished with 13 kills and 19 digs, while Ferguson accumulated 37 assists and 11 digs.

Also leading the hitters was Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) with a team-leading 14 kills followed by Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) with 12. Haase served up four aces and Jackie Reinhart (New Reigel, Ohio / New Reigel) had three.

Donelan and Reinhart had 29 digs apiece to lead the defense.

In the setback to Millikin, Street returned with 10 kills, while Reinhart and Haase had nine apiece. Ferguson posted another double-double, finishing with 26 assists and 10 digs. Also posting a double-double was Alexa Frank (Tiffin, Ohio / Calvert) with 16 assists and 10 digs.

Donelan led the back row with 34 digs, followed by Reinhart (18) and Haase (17). Amber Welfle (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) led the blockers with three blocks.

Leading the way in the sweep of Robert Morris-Peoria was Welfle with eight kills and Haase with five service aces. Bevington added seven kills of her own. Donelan tallied 16 digs.

Finally, in match four of the weekend; Bevington closed out strong with 11 kills. Adding a balanced attack was Reinhart and Haase with eight kills apiece and Welfle and Street with seven each. Ferguson finished with 25 digs, while Reinhart tallied four aces and Haase had two.

Defensively, Donelan had 19 digs to lead the way and Reinhart had four blocks.
