'Berg Shines in Border Battle

Springfield, Ohio – September 18, 2010 - The Heidelberg University volleyball team, under the guidance of 11th-year head coach Jason Miller, made a statement over the last two days while participating in the sixth annual Border Battle hosted by Wittenberg University. In the annual round robin tournament that pits Ohio institutions versus Michigan, the Berg came out with a 4-0 record.

Heidelberg, ranked 19th in the nation according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) posted three wins over fellow ranked foes en route to the perfect record.

On Friday, the Berg opened with a 3-2 (24-26, 28-26, 25-20, 17-25, 15-12) win over no. 4 ranked Calvin College. The day concluded with a 3-1 (17-25, 30-28, 27-25, 25-14) victory over no. 25 Concordia-Moorehead. The Border Battle closed out on Saturday with the Berg sweeping Alma College (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) and posting a five-set win over no. 6 Hope College (26-28, 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 15-8). Representing the Berg on the All-Tournament Team was Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel) and Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted).

In the win over Calvin, three registered double digit kills led by Reinhart's 15. Amber Welfle (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) and Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) had 13 and 11, respectively. Dishing out 20 assists, to go along with 11 digs for a double-double was Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton). Alexa Frank (Tiffin, Ohio / Calvert) assisted with the offense and had 17 assists. Reinhart served up six aces, while Suzy Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) had three.

Adding depth on defense was Donelan with 12 digs. At the net, Reinhart had 11 block assists, Bevington six and Welfle three.

Against Concordia, Bevington had a career-high 18 kills to lead the way. Reinhart backed Bevington with 13 kills, while Ferguson had two service aces.

Reinhart continued her streak of double-digit kills for the weekend with 14 against Alma. She completed a double-double with 16 digs. Ferguson and Frank combined for 43 assists. Also providing scoring was Donelan with four service aces and Reinhart with two.

Defensively, Donelan led the way with 20 digs followed by Suzy Street with 18 and then Reinhart’s 16. Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview) had two solo blocks and two block assists to lead the blockers.

The weekend concluded with Hope. Bevington had 14 kills, while Reinhart had eight. Ferguson and Frank once again took charge of the offense and provided solid backing for the defense. The duo both registered double-doubles in the victory. Ferguson finished with 21 assists and 17 digs, while Frank’s first collegiate double-double consisted of 13 assists and 11 digs.

Reinhart finished with 29 digs, while Donelan and Suzy Street had 27 and 20, respectively. Bevington had four solo blocks and Lauren Brown (Cable, Ohio / Triad) finished with three. Welfle had a team-leading five block assists.

Serving up five aces was Reinhart and Donelan contributed three.
