Wooster, Ohio – September 1, 2010 – The no. 23 ranked Heidelberg University volleyball team opened the year with a swept of the College of Wooster in a non-conference match. The Berg posted a 25-22 win in set one and followed with 25-15 and 25-16 victories to complete the sweep.
Making an immediate impact in her collegiate debut was freshman Amber Welfle (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul). Welfle earned a spot in the starting lineup and tallied a team-high 12 kills. Backing Welfle was sophomore Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) andVenessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) with seven kills apiece. Adding depth to the Berg hitters was Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / Riegel) with six kills.
Also debuting in the starting lineup tonight was sophomore Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton). Ferguson commanded the offense and dished out a career-high 32 assists, to go along with 14 digs, to register her first collegiate double-double.
Defensively, Reinhart registered 16 digs followed by All-American Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) with 14.
Heidelberg returns to action this weekend at the ONU Invitational. Action begins on Friday at 3:00 p.m. against Defiance College followed by Thomas More at 5:00 p.m.
