Tiffin, Ohio – October 13, 2009 – The No. 19 ranked Heidelberg University volleyball team worked together to sweep Baldwin-Wallace College (25-6, 25-17, 25-21) on senior night in Seiberling Gymnasium. The win improved Heidelberg to 20-4 overall and 5-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-21, 0-4.
Heidelberg holds down the top spot in the OAC standings, with Capital University, who owns a 4-0 record. The two teams will square off in Bexley, Ohio on Saturday for sole possession of first place. The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
It is the ninth time in the history of the program that the Berg has reached the 20-win plateau, and it’s the fifth time in the last six years, including four consecutive, all of which have came under the guidance of head coach Jason Miller. Also in the twenties is Heidelberg’s home winning streak which was extended to 22.
Prior to the match, Heidelberg recognized its seniors including setter Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) and middle hitters Amanda Atchison (Frankfort, Ohio / Frankfort Adena) and Amanda Montgomery (Dayton, Ohio / Carroll) for their contributions to the success of the team over the last four years. This trio will graduate as the all-time leader in wins. For their careers, they have led the Berg to an overall record of 100-38.
Tonight’s match marked the final regular season home OAC outing for the seniors. In their 100th career victory match Atchison and Montgomery contributed seven and six kills, respectively. Montgomery added two block assists and four digs. Magers led the offense, dishing out 40 assists, while adding seven digs and three kills.
Overall, Heidelberg combined to hit .330 courtesy of 48 kills in 106 attempts with 13 errors, while holding their opponents in negative figures. Leading the way was the current OAC Player of the Week Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) with a match-high 13 kills and added 15 digs for a double-double. Haase has registered a double-double in her last six-straight matches. She also had two service aces, as did Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel).
Reinhart also added 11 digs and seven kills. Finishing with eight kills and two block assists was Jacki Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview).
